Prepare home for baby

changing bagMake the most of any spare time you have before your baby arrives to get things ready for when he finally comes home.  A little preparation now will mean you can relax a little more later and spend as much time as you can getting to know your baby and settling in to your new role.

The nesting instinct – and good reasons not to overdo it!

The nesting instinct may set in as early as the fifth month, and is a natural desire to get things ready for your baby and for your new family life.  But if you don’t feel like it, don’t worry – it does not happen to everyone !  One thing you will want to prepare is the nursery.  Be careful with any redecoration that may need doing – existing paint in an older house may contain lead, which can affect the development of an unborn baby.  For re-covering, water-based paint is the safest choice, but make sure that the room is well ventilated and use a brush or roller, rather than a spray – and read the label (or better still, let someone else do it).

For the most part, normal household cleaners are not harmful to pregnant women, but again, do make sure you read the label.  Some products (for example oven cleaners) do contain solvents that you should avoid, and stay away from strong fumes.  And it you have a cat, it is recommended that pregnant women do not empty the litter tray, as cat faeces may carry a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis.  This infection is not dangerous to you, but may be to your unborn baby.

Go shopping

If you can, it is a good idea to try to have all of your baby purchases made by week 36, which is round about the time you will start to think about packing your hospital bag

Get cooking
When you return home with your baby, the last thing you want to be worrying about is making meals, so if you have the time, try to prepare some to freeze in advance.  And again, don’t feel afraid to enlist the help of others.  People are often only too willing to help, so if they offer to prepare meals for you, do some washing, or look after the baby while you have a short rest, take them up on it without hesitation !
