A double pump is the obvious option if you have twins, if breastfeeding is delayed after birth or if you and your baby are regularly separated for long periods, as single pumps may not be able to maintain your milk supply long-term. But double pumping is becoming increasingly popular with all breastfeeding women.
Whether you are returning to work or even expressing only occasionally, you may find yourself thinking of all the other things you could be doing if only pumping did not take so long. All mums know how important time saving strategies are: a double pump enables you to express milk in half the time.
Indeed, because some women, when single pumping, need to break off a few times to massage their breasts and change sides, double pumping can actually take up less than half the time. A double pumping sessio9n can be achieved in as little as 10 minutes, compared with 20 to 30 minutes using a single pump. Pumping from both breasts simultaneously has also been found to stimulate prolactin levels and increase milk production more effectively than single pumping.*
When pumping from one breast only, you may find that that you leak milk from the other, but there is no need to worry about this when you are using a double pump. Of course, most double breast pumps can also be used as single pumps, enabling you to feed your baby at one breast while you express from the other, or simply pump from one breast only.
Some women worry that if they use a double electric pump they will feel as if they are ‘hooked up to a milking machine’ - but the reality is far from this. Apart from allowing you to express your breastmilk very quickly, some double electric breast pumps are extremely light and portable, and so can easily be taken out or away with you when you need to.
Many women, after a little practice, find that they can hold the breast cushions in place for pumping using just one hand and the same side forearm, thus leaving the other hand free. You can also buy special bras developed to hold the breast cushions, so that you can even express breastmilk completely hands-free !
